Getting Found by AI, Not Just Google
Search is changing. Your content should be ready.
The shift is already happening
People are increasingly asking AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — for recommendations instead of typing queries into a search box. The scale of this shift is significant: AI-referred web traffic grew 527% year-over-year in 2025. ChatGPT processes 2.5 billion prompts per day. Perplexity surpassed 780 million monthly queries. When someone asks "what's a good web studio for a small business site?" — you want to be in the answer.
What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — is the practice of structuring your content so that AI systems cite you as a source when generating their answers. Unlike traditional search results, which list ten blue links, AI assistants typically cite only 2–7 sources per response. The field is narrow. Being in it requires deliberate effort.
How GEO differs from traditional SEO
SEO and GEO are related but not the same:
- SEO goal: appear in a list of search results and earn a click
- GEO goal: be cited inside an AI-generated answer as a trusted source
- A page can rank #1 in Google and never appear in AI responses
- A page can be cited by AI and not rank highly in traditional search
- AI systems weight structural clarity, factual density, and authority signals differently from search algorithms
What we do for GEO
We build content structure that AI systems can parse, extract from, and trust:
- Clear H2/H3 heading hierarchy — AI pulls passages, not whole pages
- Direct answers in the first paragraph of each section
- Factual, specific content — AI systems prefer verifiable claims
- Schema.org structured data — provides machine-readable context
- Consistent brand description across your domain and other online mentions
- Clean, semantic HTML — no JavaScript-dependent content that crawlers miss
Why act now?
GEO is early. Most small business websites are not yet optimized for AI citation. Brands that establish clear, structured, authoritative content now will be cited by default as AI systems accumulate training data and refine their source preferences. Waiting means competitors build that authority first. The cost of retrofitting later is higher than building it in from the start.
